据2008年12月4日《The Age》报道，维州州长John Brumby即将公布大墨尔本地区未来几年交通建设规划蓝图，即将兴建的道路和铁路工程包括：
- a new outer metropolitan ring road linking the Avalon Airport on the Princes Freeway and the Hume Freeway;
- a new road linking the existing ring road and EastLink through the environmentally sensitive north-eastern suburbs;
- the go-ahead for the proposed $750 million Frankston Bypass;
- an $8.5 billion "metro-style'' rail tunnel from the western suburbs to the south-east;
- extra bus services for Doncaster and the eastern suburbs;
- a new $1.5 billion western suburbs rail line between Werribee and Deer Park to free congestion on the Geelong and Ballarat lines; and,
- extension of the Epping rail line to South Morang and an estimated cost of $650 million.
