新西兰政府宣布危机已过，但事实是情况并不见好转，物价继续上涨，香烟一夜之间涨价10-20%，盗窃抢劫案件持续上升。从7月1日起，新西兰的汽油，牛奶，电力统统涨价；从10月1日起，新西兰的商品与服务税GST从12.5%涨到15%！新西兰政府想让大家省钱度日，但结果老百姓的日子更加难过。难怪很多人要去澳洲，人往高出走啊！
澳反对党领袖艾伯特的大选主张是将澳洲移民总数量从去年的30万人减少到17万，包括新西兰前往澳洲的人数。对此，新西兰总理John Key说，如果澳洲政府通过这样的提议，那就太出人意料了。
他进一步表示，澳大利亚一向非常欢迎新西兰的移民，因为这对他们来说是不可多得的人才资源。当然，澳大利亚政府有权决定他们的移民政策。他继续说，如果澳洲的移民政策会影响到新西兰人进入澳大利亚，那么我们也将采取相应的行动。
澳反对党领袖艾伯特表示，将新西兰作为跳板移民至澳洲的做法尚未成为他重点关注的问题。
8月4日，一名新西兰记者问艾伯特，是否担心人们将新西兰作为中转站，但最终目的却是移民至澳洲。
澳新两国签署的《跨塔斯曼海协定》允许两国公民在无需向有关当局递交申请的情况下进入另一国家旅游、游览，或者居住、工作。2008-2009年度，有47782名新西兰人来到澳洲永久或长期居住。
澳总理吉拉德8月16日表示希望看到一她表示可以预见新西兰人仍会不断移居澳大利亚，享受澳洲的生活方式，在两国的体育比赛中仍会互相揶揄。
前工党参议员Stephen Loosley也对工党政府将对新西兰公民关门的传闻表示怀疑。
不过，澳反对党移民事务发言人Scott Morrison则表示将对联盟党政府将对包括新西兰移民在内的所有移民类别进行检讨和修订。

Both main candidates for next week's Australian election (21 August) are promising or implying limits on future immigration.
But neither Labor leader and current Prime Minister Julia Gillard nor Coalition leader Tony Abbott is prepared to outline how their policies might affect New Zealanders.
Ms Gillard is campaigning on a promise of “a sustainable Australia, but not a big Australia”. She says she wants to manage population increase to protect the Australian way of life.
But she told The Nation: “I imagine we will still see New Zealanders wanting to come here to enjoy that Australian way of life, and we’ll still be teasing them when it comes to sporting contests.”
Former Labor senator Stephen Loosley says he doubts whether Labor’s policy would close the door on any New Zealanders.
Abbott’s policy involves restricting annual net migration to 170,000 annually, well down on the levels of a few years ago.
He refused to address the likely impact on would-be immigrants from New Zealand. But his party’s immigration spokesman, Scott Morrison, says all categories other than skilled migrants and refugees would be reviewed, and that includes New Zealanders.
