Tense times: A protester is taken hostage by Japanese whalers. Two crew members of the Sea Shepherd protest ship Steve Irwin, including Queenslander Benjamin Potts, were allegedly tied to the radar mast of the Japanese harpoon vessel Yushin Maru.

Japan's Institute for Cetacean Research denied that the men had been assaulted and tied up, a statement which appears to contradict photographs of the incident.
